Access to GLP-1 agonists like Wegovy and Ozempic for weight loss is hindered by inconsistent and vague insurance requirements. These expensive medications are primarily covered for diabetes, with only a few insurers including them for weight loss under strict conditions. Requirements often involve unspecified diet and exercise programs, leading to patient and provider frustration. Insurers’ cautious policies aim to manage financial risks and avoid public backlash, contrasting with clearer guidelines for other high-cost therapies like Repatha. Some insurers have stopped covering GLP-1s for weight loss due to patient non-compliance. Robert Hartwig, director of the risk and uncertainty management program at USC, says “this approach will provoke anxiety among patients and burden providers.”
