Denver Post 12/01/22- Colorado wildfires are making it harder to insure homes. Could a publicly funded plan stave off an insurance crisis?

Today’s Denver Post Front Page Sunday headline story featured a lengthy, in depth piece entitled “Will Insurance Companies Opt to Leave Colorado?” focusing on insurance affordability, availability and CO DOI/legislature’s appetite for a residual market/FAIR Plan and the CO DOI study on market conditions. Dr. Robert Hartwig is interviewed in this story giving his insight on the topic. Hartwig cautioned Colorado about creating a state-funded insurance pool just because people with powerful voices are the ones feeling the pinch in the private insurance market. “Is the crisis that people just don’t want to pay what the risk-appropriate premium is?” Hartwig said. “Aspen is not known as a bastion of low-income homes. It’s quite the opposite. It’s a millionaire’s paradise and people flock there. But again, we are talking about people with some influence with members of the legislature and the governor’s office and they know who to call.” Click here to access the article.
